Obituary

Annamae (Ann) Gibson, known by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Nena.  Ann was born in Nauvoo, Illinois to Mr. Henry Wenzel and Mary Glass Wenzel on April 8, 1920.  Ann was the 2 nd oldest child born to Henry and Mary Wenzel, having three sisters and two brothers.  Ann's entire life was providing care for others, beginning early in life by helping raise her siblings after her mother's early death at only 12 years old.  Graduating from Warsaw High School in Warsaw, Illinois, Ann made South Pittsburg her home in 1959 after she married Mr. John Gibson Jr. on 2/28/1944.  Ann worked as an LPN and charge nurse at South Pittsburg Municipal Hospital, providing care for Marion County residents for over 40 years.

John and Ann had 6 beautiful children, four daughters and two sons.  Working tirelessly after becoming widowed, Ann was able to continue to provide the care for all 6 children, as a single mother.  Ann suffered a devastating loss of her youngest son when he was only 21 years old.  Through the trials and tribulations that preceded Ann, she was able to retire as a charge nurse in 1985 and focus on her continued life's working caring for others.  Ann was able to see 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren be born into a legacy that she had created.

Ann was an avid Roman Catholic.  She has been a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church since moving to South Pittsburg in 1959.  She not only made a name for herself as a beautiful, loving, compassionate caregiver, but also as a devout Catholic.  Ann always gave service to her church for as long as she was able.  When Ann was 98 years old, she moved to Georgia to allow her children to provide care for her, the care that she had so selfless given to so many others until she was no longer able.  At 100 years old, Ann moved back to Kimball, TN. to reside with her daughter until her passing on October 16, 2020.  God was with her in birth and with her in Death.  Her parents, siblings, child, grandchildren and other family members were waiting to greet her with smiling faces at the gates of Heaven.

Ann is preceded in death by her parents Henry (Mary) Wenzel, sisters Rita Wenzel, Katherine (Joe) Haas, brothers, Bud (Ruth) Wenzel, Joe (Elaine) Wenzel, her beautiful son Edward (Eddie) Gibson, great-grandson Steven Shelton and brother in-law Levi Smith.

Leaving behind those of us left to cherish her memory are her sister, Beatrice Smith and her children: son, John Gibson III (Dave Scolaro), daughters Mary (Edward) Berry, Rita (Jerry) Bagwell, Jackie (Jim) Lofty, and Cathy (DJ) Dobbs. 14 grandchildren (including Lyndsey Freeman), 19 great-grandchildren and 7 great great-grandchildren.

Ann will be in the care of Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg, TN. until Monday; October 19, 2020 where her services will be held at 3:00 pm at Shrine of the Virgin of the Poor in South Pittsburg. The family will receive friends and family from 1:30 pm-3:00 pm at the Shrine prior to the service.  Ann will be laid to rest next to her beloved son Eddie in Cumberland View Cemetery in Kimball, TN.
