Billie Irish Carter Burrows, 82 of Bridgeport, AL, died Sunday, May 8, 2016 in a local healthcare facility.
The daughter of the late James Lofton and Lee Oma Lewis Carter, she was a faithful member of South Pittsburg First Baptist Church. She was employed by the South Pittsburg Hustler for almost 20 years, then retired from employment there and went on to work at Rogers Funeral Home for almost 25 years. While she was working at the funeral home, Billie filled the roles of not only secretary, but mother, grandmother, friend and spiritual guide for the entire staff. Daily, she ministered to and shared the Lord's comfort with all who walked through their doors. She retired from Rogers Funeral Home in 2008. Billie was "Nana" not just to her grandchildren, but also to her extended families of Hewgley, Carter, Rogers, Goeltz & Payne children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Samuel Alfred Burrows, three sisters, Jennie Ruth Carter, Evelyn Carter and Jere Brewer, and one grandson, Richard Benjamin Hewgley.
Billie is survived by her children, Teena (John) Hewgley and Sammy (Terry Lea) Burrows all of South Pittsburg; grandchildren, Brian (Heather) Hewgley of Phoenix, AZ, Nick (Katie) Burrows of Chattanooga, TN, Carter Hewgley of Washington, D.C.; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Grace Burrows and Carter Belle Hewgley; brother, Dr. Jay (Susan) Carter; sisters, Joan Plummer of Houston, TX, Jamie Schaatt of Richmond, TX; brother-in-law, Buford Burrows of Bridgeport, AL; sister-in-law, Margaret Lee of Chattanooga, TN; special nieces and caregivers, Claudette Smith, Glenda Brooks both of Jasper, TN and Marty White of Bridgeport, AL.
Funeral services will be conducted from South Pittsburg First Baptist Church at 11:00 AM Central time on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 with Rev. Brad Bridgman officiating. Interment will be in Cumberland View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday evening, May 10th from 5:00-8:00 PM Central time at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Hospice of Chattanooga Foundation, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416 or First Baptist Church, Capital Campaign fund, PO Box 192, South Pittsburg, TN 37380.
