July 13, 1915 – February 18, 2017
Buford Burrows, 101, of Bridgeport, AL died Saturday, February 18, 2017.
The son of the late George Albert and Frankie Mae Brown Burrows, he was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having served as a Sergeant in campaigns in North Africa, Italy and France.
He played professional baseball for the Pittsburg Pirates and in Kansas City. He retired after over 30 years with the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, TN, working in their Safety and Document Security departments and as a courier for secure documents. While in Oak Ridge, he also played community league softball. He was a longtime, active member of First Baptist Church in South Pittsburg, TN, where he was an ordained deacon and was their oldest member.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Bessie Hall Burrows; brothers, Robert S., John H. and Samuel A. Burrows; and sisters, Mildred B. Holland, Grace Faris, and Margaret Lee; nephews, Bobby Burrows, John Daniel Holland, and Thomas F. Brown, Jr.; and nieces, Eva Ruth Matthews and Perline Berry.
He is survived by nieces and nephews, Jane Andrews, Wayne Burrows, Judy Lovell, Kim Burrows, John Burrows, Jr., Sammy Burrows, Teena Hewgley, Jan Hamock, Jim Holland, Linda Rogers, Diana Chance, Buster Faris, Andrea Halstead, William "Sonny" Stewart, Elizabeth Campbell, Carolyn Headrick, John T. Hughes, Terry Hughes, Martha Pendley, Judy Hughes Solomon, John Haskew, Tim Haskew, and Bobby Hall.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Baptist Church, South Pittsburg on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 2:00pm Central time with visitation from 12 Noon until service time at the church. Interment will follow at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.
