It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carol Roberta McCain on October 2, 2025, at NHC Nursing Home. She was a beloved mother whose kindness, wisdom, and joy touched the lives of all who knew her.
Life and Legacy of Carol Roberta McCain
Born on May 12, 1943, in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Carol Roberta McCain lived a life marked by faith, perseverance, and service. From an early age, she embraced a love of learning, and a deep devotion to God—values that shaped her path and inspired those around her.
Carol was a trailblazer. She graduated as valedictorian from McReynolds High School and pursued higher education in Memphis, Tennessee, earning her associate degree. Upon returning home, she began a distinguished 33-year career at Provident Insurance, becoming the fifth African American ever hired by the company—a testament to her determination and excellence.
Her impact extended far beyond the workplace. Carol played for 29 years with the Provident Vets softball team, helping lead them to seven national championships. Her achievements with the team earned her a place in the Softball Hall of Fame with the team.
Carol's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted member of her church, where she sang in the choir and served in multiple roles, including secretary and treasurer. She wasn't just a member—she was a worker, always ready to serve and uplift her community.
Outside of her professional and spiritual commitments, Carol found joy in playing cards and traveling, especially on cruise ships to the Bahamas. Even in her later years, as her health declined, she remained determined to explore the world and savor life's adventures.
Carol Roberta McCain will be remembered for her tenacity, warmth, and unwavering kindness. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the barriers she broke, and the love she shared with family, friends, and her faith community.
Carol Roberta McCain was preceded in death by her mother, Celia Kelso, and her brothers, Joe Kelso and Lewis Kelso Sr.
She is survived by her only son, Anthony (Tonya) McCain; nephew, Lewis Kelso Jr.; niece, Glendale Kelso; and her grandchildren, Sarah McCain and Maya McCain, as well as countless friends and loved ones.
