Obituary

Donald Nye Grider, 67, of South Pittsburg, died May 4, 2007, at his home following an extended illness. He was the son of the late Nye and Zora Stewart Grider.A 1963 graduate of Tennessee Tech, he played on the OVC championship team, and later received his Masters Degree from MTSU in 1969. He started teaching and coaching at South Pittsburg High School in 1963, and in 1969 he became the head football coach and won the first Tennessee Class A Football championship. In his 31 years at SPHS, he also coached his teams to the state finals in 1974, 1975, 1985, and 1986, and was also named Young Educator of the Year in 1969. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in South Pittsburg.Survivors include his wife, Gaynell Grider; sons, Vic Grider and wife Tracy and Heath Grider and wife, Tonya all of South Pittsburg, one sister, Jean Collins of Cleveland, TN, three grandchildren, Victoria Grider, Josie Grider, and Braxton Nye Grider, and several nieces and nephews.Services will be conducted from the First Baptist Church in South Pittsburg on Sunday, May 6, at 2:00pm CDT, with Rev. Jeff Lane, Rev. Charlie Campbell, and Jim Warren officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 9:00pm, and on Saturday from 3:00pm to 9:00pm, at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the SPHS Quarterback Club, POBox 534, South Pittsburg, TN 37380, or to the American Diabetes Association, 900 E. Hill Avenue, Suite 240, Knoxville, TN 37915.
