Mr. Earl C. Jones, Sr., 93, of Jasper, TN died Sunday, June 22, 2008 in a Dunlap Nursing Home.
The son of the late St. George Sidney Jones, Sr. and Virginia Edna Miner Jones, he graduated from high school in Murfreesboro, TN and joined the Marine Corps at the age of 18. His first assignment was with Gunboat Asheville in Shanghai, China and he was a member of the China Marine, which predates World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and also served during the Korean conflict. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, he was employed with TVA and retired from as Senior Fire Protection Engineer Power Production Division in Chattanooga. He received his higher education from Oklahoma State University graduating with honors. During the years that he lived in Gallatin, TN, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was Scout master for Troop #425 for many years. Upon his return to Jasper, he joined the Jasper Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was also very active in the Boy Scouts having received his Eagle Scout after his retirement. He also received numerous awards for his service to Scouting, including the Long Rifle and Wood Badges. He and his late wife, Margaret, were also known as active supporters of many charities.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Whitmer Jones and brother, St. George Sidney Jones, Jr.
He is survived by his son, Earl C. Jones, Jr. and his wife, Arlene of Palastine, TX; grandsons, David Marcus Holder, Samuel Wade Holder, Michael Holder and Andrew Jones; sister, Elia Jones Rogers of Nashville, TN; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on Friday, June 27, 2008 at 11 AM CDT with Reverend James Patterson officiating. Interment will be in the Chattanooga National Cemetery at 1 PM CDT on Friday.
The family will gather with friends for visitation on Thursday, June 26 from 5-9 PM CDT at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper.
