George Hargiss, 81, of the Battle Creek community of South Pittsburg, TN died Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at a local hospital.
Son of the late William E. and Sudie Catherine Hargis, he was a 33-year employee of Sun Oil Company, a merchant marine and a sawmill operator for 20 years.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Mae Hargiss; brother, Newton Hargis; sister, Emma Lou Cain and aunt, Mary Jane "Sis" Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Hargiss of South Pittsburg; sons, Jeffrey Edward (Rebecca Lynn) Hargiss of Bridgeport, AL and Dan Hargis of New Jersey; daughter, Patricia Murray of Detroit, MI; brother, Melvin Hargis of Trenton, GA; sisters, Mary Lee Groover of Chattanooga, and Charlsie Fitz-Gerald of South Pittsburg; several grandchildren, including Craig Hargiss of South Pittsburg, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted from the South Pittsburg Rogers Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, August 13th, officiated by Virgil Thomas and Jeff Nelson.
