Gunnery Sergeant Harold Benjamin West, USMC retired, age 86, of South Pittsburg, TN passed away Friday, January 16, 2015.


Born on March 18, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri to the late Frank Clinton and Carrie Flowers West, he was a graduate of Jones College Business School in Orlando, Florida and a beloved member of Battle Creek Baptist Church. He served his country for 23 years, first as a Merchant Marine, then through multiple enlistments with the US Marine Corps. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Frank West and sister, Margaret Cox.


He is survived by his wife, Phyllis West of South Pittsburg, TN; three children, Robert West of Jasper, TN, Debra West and Frank West both of South Pittsburg; grandchildren, Jonathan, Rachel, Amber and Frankie; great-granddaughter, Jodi Leigh; several nieces and nephews.


Graveside funeral services with military honors will be conducted at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 10:30 am Central time (11:30 Eastern).


The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, January 19, 2015 from 6-8pm Central time at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg.


The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Battle Creek Baptist Church or to the Disabled Veterans Fund.
