Obituary

Helen Phillips Walker, 79, devoted mother and loving wife, died on Monday, March 26, 2007 in Tallahassee, FL.A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday, May 19, at the Chapel on the Hill in South Pittsburg, built by her great, great grandfather, Owen Russell Beene, followed by interment in the Richards Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to the South Pittsburg Historical Society.Helen was born in South Pittsburg to James Richards Phillips and Eunice Haskew Phillips and was the granddaughter of James and Martha Phillips and Samuel and Dona Haskew. She moved to Fort Pierce, FL when she was twelve and graduated from St. Lucie County High School. She returned to Tennessee to attend the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority, which recently recognized her as a 60-year member.She and her husband of 55 years, Donald R. Walker, moved from Fort Pierce to Tallahassee, FL in 1992 to be near their children and grandchildren. In Tallahassee, Helen was a steadfast member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and Circle #2 at Trinity United Methodist Church. She was an active member and officer of the Tallahassee Music Guild, and a member of the Economic Club of Florida.Helen was an avid reader and had keen interest in political and cultural affairs. But most of all, she was devoted to her children and granddaughters. She leaves behind her husband, Donald, and two children, Wendy Abberger and husband, Lester; and Reed Walker, both of Tallahassee; two granddaughters, Beth Briley of Baltimore, MD and Julia Briley, a student at the University of Georgia; one sister, Elinor Blum, also a South Pittsburg native, now living in Fort Pierce; and many cousins and several nieces and nephews.The family is grateful to Helen's cousins, Mrs. Louis Fuqua of South Pittsburg, and Mr. Jerre Haskew of Chattanooga for their advice and support of Helen on her coming home to Tennessee.
