Mr. Horace Edward Durham, 94, of Jasper, TN passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009. He was born January 20, 1915, in the New Hope Community to Robert Vinson and Sarah Ellen Beene Durham. He was a life-long resident of Marion County, Tennessee, living most of his life in South Pittsburg.
Mr. Durham was a member of the Sweedens Cove Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and church treasurer for many years. He was a graduate of South Pittsburg High School and attended Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Chattanooga. Mr. Durham farmed and taught school in Marion County for 8 years. He was then employed by Gentry Chevrolet before becoming affiliated with Hamilton Furniture and Appliance Company where he was part-owner and manager for thirty years until his retirement. He will be remembered by family and friends for his love of family and church, his work ethic, and his enjoyment of traveling, reading, and football. He was blessed with an active lifestyle for 94 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Inez James Durham; parents, Robert Vinson and Sarah Ellen Beene Durham; brother, Russ Durham; sisters, Mamie Durham, Millie Reeves, Ruth Blevins, Dorothy Blevins; and son-in-law, James Floyd Mayfield.
He is survived by his son, Horace Edward (Lois) Durham, Jr. of Chapin, South Carolina, daughters, Maxine (Jerry) Smith of Hixson and Roberta "Robbie" Mayfield of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Donna Hicks of Flintstone, GA, Ashley (Paul) Matheny of Irmo, South Carolina, J. Lynn (Cindy) Smith, Jr. of Hixson, Jan (Todd) Noe of Soddy Daisy, Christy Nobles of Murfreesboro, James Floyd (Autumne) Mayfield, Jr. of Nashville; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 15, at 2:00 PM at the South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home, with Elders Joe Hildreth, Virgil Herron and George Denmark officiating. Burial will follow at Cumberland View Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday, December 14th from 5-8 PM, CST at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg.
