Obituary

J. Pope Lasater, 91, of Jasper, died Monday in the Hospice unit of NHA Care in Dunlap, Tennessee. Pope was born in Sweedens Cove on March 15, 1915. A lifelong resident of Marion County, he was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard a destroyer escort in the North Atlantic, and was a life member of VFW Post 6362 in Jasper. He had worked many years for R. D. Gass on the rolling store with Louis Lasater. He retired from the TVA Power Stores Section on January 2, 1976 after many years of service, then had the misfortune of developing macular degeneration in his later years, which made him almost completely blind.He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Briggs and Fannie Beene Lasater; his wife, Electa Lay Lasater; five sisters, Lenora Simpson, Ethel Peterson, Fulvia Smith, Katherine Crockett, and Juanita Davenport; two brothers, Charles Briggs Lasater and Bryan Wilson Lasater.Pope is survived by one brother, L. Joseph Lasater of Nashville, and several nieces and nephews.Private burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 9th, from 4 - 5pm, CST.
