Obituary

Jackson C. "Jack" Raulston died peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at his home at the Bridge at Ooltewah, TN.  He was just shy of his 92 nd birthday.

He is survived by his wife of more than 70 years, Ginna Ambrester Raulston, his daughter, Marsha Raulston, and her wife, Margaret Rose Boric, of San Francisco, CA; six special nieces (each being his "favorite"), Lynn (Dr. Charles R.) Adcock, Jody (Wilson) Loyd, Margaret Ann (Benny) Rollins, Paula Sue Braden, Dava (Mike) Quarles, and Angie (Danny) Smith; nephew, Bobby (Terry) Ambrester; sisters-in-law, Patsy (Bob) Sherrill and Peggy (Perry) Gouge; several cousins and other kin. There are two very special young men who were always in Jack's heart - "Master" James Hicks and David Massie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mancel C. Raulston and Hewlett Kelly Raulston, his brother, Joseph "Chick" (Allie Jane) Raulston, his sister, Margaret (Paul) Braden, and many other beloved relatives.

Born May 15, 1926, in Sweetens Cove, Tennessee, the family later moved to Richard City, where Jack was educated at Richard Hardy Memorial School. He graduated from South Pittsburg High School and Vanderbilt University, where he received his B.A. and J.D. degrees. His collegiate education was delayed by the Second World War, having joined the Navy a few days after graduating from High School. While in the Navy he attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Bainbridge, MD. The next year the U.S. Navy gave him a "fleet appointment" to the academy, but he opted to pursue a legal education at Vanderbilt.

After graduating from Vanderbilt Law School in February 1952, he began his practice of law in Kingsport, Tennessee, which lasted for 54 years, retiring in 2006 and moving to Chattanooga. While in Kingsport, he was active in the Kingsport Jaycees, the Kingsport Preaching Mission, the Kingsport Kiwanis Club, the Devotion Merchant's Association, and the Tri-Cities Estate Planning Council. He was selected as Kingsport's "Outstanding Young Man" in 1959. He and his wife were avid golfers and members of the Ridgefields Country Club in Kingsport.

Jack and Ginna were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport where both had served as Deacon and Elder. At the time of his death, they were members of the Second Presbyterian Church in downtown Chattanooga.

He qualified for membership in the "First Families of Tennessee" through his ancestors, Matthew Raulston, Alexander Kelly, and Robert Bean, each having been residents of Tennessee before it became a state.

Professionally, he served as President of the Kingsport Bar Association. In 1961, he became the youngest Trial Judge in Tennessee when Governor Buford Ellington named him as Judge Chancellor of the newly created Law and Chancery Court of Sullivan County. The next year he ran, unopposed, and was elected for an eight-year term.  After serving for two years in that term, he chose to re-enter the practice of law, and spent many years advocating for better compensation for Tennessee's judges. He was named to the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Bar Association and served six years on the Supreme Court's Board of Professional Responsibility.
