Judge Clifford Layne, 94, of Jasper, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

Born on December 18, 1931, in Jasper, Tennessee, Clifford was the son of the late Marvin Marion Layne and Bonnie Bible Layne. A lifelong resident of Marion County, he graduated from Marion County High School in 1949 and attended Tennessee Tech before volunteering to serve his country in the United States Navy on January 15, 1951, during the Korean War. He served honorably as a Seaman First Class.

While serving in the Navy, Clifford married the love of his life, Betty Richardson of Whitwell, Tennessee. The sacrifices of military service were evident early in their marriage, as Clifford saw Betty only twelve days during their first eight months as husband and wife. Their devotion to one another endured for more than seven decades, and they shared 72 wonderful years together before her passing.

Following his military service, Clifford owned and operated Layne's Paint and Body Shop while completing his degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His commitment to public service and the citizens of Marion County led him to a distinguished judicial career. Clifford was elected Marion County General Sessions Court Judge, serving with honor and dedication for 32 years. He also served as the Municipal Court Judge for the Town of Jasper for 15 years. Throughout his years on the bench, he earned the respect of colleagues, attorneys, and citizens alike through his fairness, wisdom, and integrity.

Clifford was an active member of numerous civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of the Alhambra Temple, the American Legion, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a Shriner. He was proud of his service to both his community and his country and valued the friendships he developed through these organizations.

In addition to his deep love for his beloved wife, Clifford had a special affection for animals and treasured the companionship of his pets throughout his life.

In addition to his parents, Clifford was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Richardson Layne, and his close friend, Bobby Wiggins.

He is survived by his devoted caregiver and special friends, Lonna and Doug Henderson; dear friends Doris Wiggins and Billy and Janie Simpson; and many other friends, colleagues, and community members whose lives were touched by his kindness, guidance, and friendship.

Judge Layne's life was one of service, dedication, and enduring love. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he influenced during his military service, judicial career, and lifelong commitment to his community. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
