Mary Simmons Rogers, 86, of Jasper, TN, died Sunday in a Chattanooga healthcare facility.
Born January 28, 1927 in Richard City, TN, the daughter of the late Roy Franklin and Martha Ellen Mayfield Simmons, she was the wife of Robert Ross Rogers of Jasper from November 10, 1955 until his death in 2002. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Rosealine S. Miner, and two brothers, James Cecil Simmons and Roy Franklin Simmons, Jr.
"Aunt Mary", as she was known to many, loved "all the beautiful things on God's green earth", including cooking for friends and family, watching and loving children as they grew, nature, sports, singing, and creating things of beauty with her hands. She had taught herself to arrange flowers and to decorate cakes, and made wedding cakes and planned receptions for many couples over the years. She was truly a Godly woman with many talents.
A member of the South Pittsburg Church of Christ, she was educated at South Pittsburg High School, David Lipscomb College, and George Peabody College, taught a year at Whitwell High School, and had worked at Miller Brothers Company in Chattanooga, had been a social worker at Marion County's Welfare Department, Owned and Managed Castle Rock Trailer Park with her husband, and at Hale's Super Market where she managed the Floral department and worked also in the Deli.
She is survived by a sister, Barbara S. Hale of Jasper, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted from the South Pittsburg Church of Christ on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 3:00pm, with Ron Gilbert and Billy Watkins officiating. Interment will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Jasper Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home on Monday, January 27th from 4-9pm Central time and on Tuesday from 12 noon until service time at the South Pittsburg Church of Christ.
