Mr. Mervin "Merv" Merritt, age 84, of Signal Mountain, TN passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 after a brief illness at Alexian Health & Rehabilitation Center on Signal Mountain.
Mr. Merritt was a native of Greensboro, NC, born January 8, 1926 to the late Glenn Gladstone Merritt and the late Margarethe Tutzauer Merritt. In addition to his parents, Merv was preceded in death by his younger brother, Lt. Commander, Glen Carl Merritt of Mount Laurel, NJ.
Mr. Merritt served his country during World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he attended Duke University where he earned his Business Degree in three years and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, Business Fraternity.
Mr. Merritt took a position with McBee Systems from which he retired after 47 years with the company. He also had his own CPA firm from which he retired just last year.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mrs. Margaret McCaskey Merritt; three children, Mrs. Rebecca Merritt Mills, her husband, Donald Joe Mills, Jr. and their children, Christopher Andrew Mills and Sarah Catherine Mills of Marietta, GA; Mrs. Stephanie Merritt Colvin and her husband, LeBron Colvin, of South Pittsburg, TN and Mr. Richard Stewart Merritt, his wife, Helen Ann Murphy Merritt, and their children, Ian Stewart Merritt and Victoria Lynne Merritt of Rome, GA. Merv is also survived by his younger sister, Mrs. Robert C. (Gretchen) Parker of Miller's Creek, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Merritt was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church since 1961 and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons #758 on Signal Mountain where he had held every elected position at the Lodge. He was also a member and treasurer of the Life Investors Club of Chattanooga and was a founding member/treasurer of the Regional Hosta Society of Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, Merv would be very pleased with donations to the Signal Mountain Masonic Lodge #758, P.O. Box 501, Signal Mountain, TN 37377.
Graveside funeral services will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on December 16, 2010 at 2PM EST.
