Peggy A. Gouge, of Powell TN passed away peacefully, November 19, 2021, at UT Medical Center in Knoxville, TN
She is survived by stepchildren, Tony Gouge (Leslie), of Akin, SC., Cheri Doane (David) of Knoxville, TN, a sister-in-law Mary Catherine Gouge of Knoxville, TN., grandchildren, Laura Gouge of Washington, DC, Catherine Gouge of Akin, SC., Matthew Doane (Katherine) of Acworth, GA., Ashton Dowling (Kevin) of Knoxville, TN and three great grandchildren, Anderson Kate, Isaiah, and Levi, a sister Patsy Sherrill (Bob) of South Pittsburg, TN, a nephew Bobby Ambrester (Terry) of South Pittsburg TN and two nieces Angie Smith (Danny) of East Ridge, TN, and Marsha Raulston (Marge) of San Francisco, CA
She was predeceased in death by her husband of more than 34 years Perry S. Gouge, her parents Harry and Lily Mae Ambrester , brother, Billy H Ambrester (Bonnie) of South Pittsburg, TN., sister Ginna A. Raulston (Jack) of Kingsport and Chattanooga TN.
Peggy was born October 17,1932 in Kimball, TN. She attended school in South Pittsburg, TN and later attended Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro where she graduated with her B.S. in elementary education. At MTSU she held many leadership positions including Student Body Vice President, student paper society editor, Cheerleader, Dormitory president, and Alpha Psi Omega Future Teachers of America.
Peggy began her career teaching elementary school in Donaldson and Richard City, TN. She also taught briefly at South Pittsburg High School. She was hired by the United States Air Force to teach Air Forcechildren on the Tachikawa, Air Force base in Tokyo, Japan. After returning from Japan she taught elementary school in Kingsport, TN.
Peggy later established her home in Oak Ridge, TN, and taught school for
40+ years at Woodland Elementary school.
Peggy enjoyed corresponding with and motivating friends and family, including many former students, and was well known for her frequent warm notes with a dollar bill tucked inside.
Peggy and Perry were loyal members of the First Cumberland
Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge. They participated in the activities of church life and Peggy taught Sunday School for many years. They were also very active in the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning and led several adult travel adventures as part of the ORICL program.
A memorial service will be held at the First Cumberland PresbyterianChurch of Oak Ridge, at 3 P.M. Saturday June 18, 2022. Burial will be conducted later in the year at Cumberland View Cemetery in Kimball, TN.
The family expresses much appreciation for the help and support of wonderful caregivers and friends Angela Tanner, Sarah Makin, and Pat Brown O'Connor.
