IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Verna
Miller
September 15, 2020
Verna Brooks Miller, 97, of South Pittsburg, TN, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 15, with her loved ones by her side.
She was born May 5, 1923, to the late Roy Anthony Brooks and Thelma Turner Brooks of Dayton, TN.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Russell W. Miller; her daughter Janet Miller Hampton; 3 brothers, R. L., Odell, and Roy Jr.; and 3 sisters, Mary Ruth, Bobbie, and Martha.
Verna was a member of the First Baptist Church South Pittsburg, where she was a long-time choir member, taught children's Sunday school for 30 years, and worked in VBS. She also served her community as a hospital Grey Lady, on the Democratic Women of Marion County, and on the South Pittsburg Housing Authority Board.
She was a homemaker for the majority of her married life, but she also worked for the public school as a Teachers' Aide. During World War II she left her home in Dayton, TN, and went to work as a welder in Detroit, MI.
She loved singing, working in the yard, planting flower pots, playing cards with her family and friends, and babysitting her grandchildren. Her biggest passion was having two 3-day yard sales each year. Her family dubbed her the yard sale "queen" of South Pittsburg. She thoroughly enjoyed going to antique and thrift stores and other yard sales to stock up on her goods to sell twice a year.
She only completed her 9 th grade year of school but worked hard to get her GED as an adult. Verna was well-known for her bright smile and terrific sense of humor. She did laugh harder at her own jokes, that is, when she'd finally stop laughing long enough to finish them.
Verna is survived by her son, Larry (Peggy) McDonald; her daughter, Cheryl (Joe) Galloway; her son-in-law, George Hampton; her sister, Linda Nalley; 2 brothers, Jackie (Joann) Brooks and Billy (Betsy) Brooks; 7 grandchildren, Brian McDonald, Jill Kirby, Jenny Frame, Chris Hampton, Kristen Clounch, Keith Galloway, and Katie Burrows; and 13 great-grandchildren. We were so blessed to have had her in our lives, and she will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens with Reverend Jeff Lane and Reverend Charlie Campbell officiating.
The family will have a private visitation.
Pallbearers will be Brian McDonald, Chris Hampton, Keith Galloway, Tim Clounch, Nick Burrows, Chris Kirby and Chase Clounch.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Martin-Boyd Christin Home, 6845 Standifer Gap Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37421 or Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Dr., Chattanooga, TN 37416.
Arrangements are by Rogers Funeral Home, 400 Laurel Ave., South Pittsburg, TN, 37380, (423) 837-7176.
