Walter McVirgil Watson, Jr., 91, a native of South Pittsburg, TN passed September 8, 2013 at NHC Healthcare in Chattanooga, TN.
Walter was the son of Walter Sr. (Bo) and Hilda Northcutt Watson who preceded him in death. A son Walter Michael, passed away at age thirteen.
Walter graduated from McReynolds High School where he was a standout in football and other sports. He enjoyed the building trades classes under Rev. J. D. McCord and followed that vocation after high school. During his tenure at Tuskegee Institute he majored in Industrial Arts and was a member of the ground and maintenance crew (packaging parachutes) for the renowned Tuskegee Airmen. The movie "Red Wings" was about the ability and courage of these fighter pilots.
While in college Walter met and later married Margie Marie West and they started their teaching careers with the Fulton County Board of Education. He retired in 1986 after 37 years working in the Vocational schools.
Walter and Marie enjoyed 52 years of marriage with a big celebration on their Golden Anniversary. She passed away August 16, 1998. They were active participants in the Amway Corporation where he earned the rank of Emerald which he loved to boast about.
Walter moved back to South Pittsburg into the Chester Powell Senior apartments nearly two years ago. He was happy to be back home and fellowship with everyone he met. He never met a stranger and could entertain one person or a crowd with his wit and infectious smile.
Survivors include cousins, Julia Fultz White and Billie Jordan Wylie, of Chattanooga, TN, John L. Jordan and Hilda S. Aker of South Pittsburg, TN, Kenneth Jordan of Kimball, TN and brother-in-law, Samuel West of Atlanta, GA, many loving nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 19, at 12:00 noon, in the chapel of Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg.
A committal service will be held at 1:00pm Eastern on Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
