Winnie Barber Bennett, 98, of Kimball, Tennessee, died Sunday, October 20, 2019.
Born and raised in the small town of Lancaster, Texas, she married George Ham Bennett, Jr. on December 26, 1938 and they moved to his hometown of Magnolia, Arkansas. They continued to make their home there until 1952, when they moved their family to South Pittsburg, Tennessee. She was a wonderful mother and was always active in her children's lives. While they were in school, she served as a room mother, Brownie Troop leader, Girl Scout Troop leader and even as a Cub Scout leader.
In addition to her tireless work inside her home, Winnie worked for the South Pittsburg Knitting Mill, South Pittsburg Clinic, South Pittsburg Cleaners, and as a Teacher's Aide at South Pittsburg High School. She was also active in her community, serving as an Adult Education Business Class Teacher, the Director of the Senior Citizens Center in Jasper, Tennessee, assisting with elections as a poll worker in Kimball, and as a member of the Home Demonstration Club in Sweetens Cove. She was known as a wonderful cook, seamstress, gardener, vegetable canner, and award-winning artist.
She had served in all the female stations, including Grand Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star, and had also been appointed as Grand Marshall in the East in the Order of the Amaranth. She was also a longtime member of Kimball Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph H. & Sally E. Cole Barber; her husband of 63 years, G. H. Bennett, Jr.; brothers, Horace, Elvin, and Edwin Barber; and sisters, Thelma Jeffers and Mary Lee Curtis.
She is survived by her children, Jackie (Dave) Daffron of Jasper, Tennessee, LaJuan Blevins of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, and Harold (Tona) Bennett of Rock Spring, Georgia; grandchildren, Misty (Mark) O'Leary, Chris (Lisa) Blevins, LaDonna (Jed) Morrow, Randy (Kelley) Blevins, Candice (Daniel) Burgan, and Windi Locke; great-grandchildren, Dawson Locke, Chandler Locke, Madeline Burgan, Zachary (Riki) Blevins, Kayla Morrow, Tanner O'Leary, and Erin O'Leary; great-great-grandsons, Jace Blevins & Brantley Locke; sister, Nelda Simmons; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted from the South Pittsburg Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Central time on Wednesday, October 23, 2019. Interment will follow the service at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens in Jasper, Tennessee.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, October 22nd from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Central time at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bennett's request was that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a tribute in her memory do so by planting a tree.
